How to remember names (and details about people)

Forgetting a name is normal, and fixable. Here is why it happens and what actually helps.

Why we forget names

Psychologists point to a few causes (see this overview from Psychology Today). When we meet someone, we are often busy thinking about what to say next, so the name never fully registers. Names are also more arbitrary than faces or jobs: "Baker" tells your brain nothing, while "a tall woman who loves sailing" gives it plenty to hold on to. And unless we use a name soon after hearing it, it fades quickly.

Eight techniques that work

  1. Pay attention. Pause what you are doing, look at the person and really listen when they say their name.
  2. Repeat it. Say it back ("Nice to meet you, Maria") and use it once or twice naturally in the conversation.
  3. Ask about it. "Is that short for something?" or "How do you spell that?" gives you a second exposure and shows interest.
  4. Make an association. Link the name to something vivid: a rhyme, a famous person, a feature or the place you met.
  5. Connect it to a detail. Names stick better when attached to a fact, such as "Maria, the architect who is learning to surf".
  6. Visualise it. Picture the name written across their forehead, or the spelling in your mind.
  7. Review soon. Recall the names you learned within a few hours, while it is still fresh. Repetition over time is what makes memories last.
  8. Write it down. Even the best memories benefit from a backup. As Michigan State University Extension notes, writing a name down also signals that you care about the person.

Names are only the start

Remembering a name gets you through the introduction. What builds a relationship is remembering what the person told you: their job, their family, their plans for the summer. Mentioning a detail from your last conversation tells someone you listened, and that is what makes people feel valued and encourages them to open up.

Capture it while it is fresh

A simple routine is enough:

That is exactly what Friendie was made for. Add a person in seconds, jot down the details and set a reminder to say hello. Next time, you will arrive prepared.

Never blank on a name again. Keep everyone you meet, and everything about them, in one place. Start free.
